The Courage to Speak, Act and Stand for What Is Right

«“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”»

Leadership is not merely about holding a position; it is about having the courage to take a position when it matters. A genuine leader does not simply search for consensus—he or she helps to mould consensus around what is right, just and beneficial to society.

One of the greatest dangers to society is not only the presence of evil, but the silence of good people in the face of evil. As Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.”

Our society today faces many challenges—corruption, injustice, dishonesty, abuse of power, intolerance and indifference. We must not become so accustomed to wrongdoing that we begin to regard it as normal.

Never be afraid to do what is right. The price of speaking up may sometimes be uncomfortable, but the cost of remaining silent can be far greater. When we look the other way, we may preserve our comfort, but we compromise our conscience.

Let us therefore remember:

Evil triumphs not only when bad people do wrong, but when good people see wrong and do nothing.

Doing the right thing requires courage. Speaking against injustice requires conviction. Standing for truth requires character.

Let us eschew evil, reject injustice, speak for the voiceless, defend what is right and leave our society better than we found it.

May Allah give us the courage to recognise evil, the wisdom to confront it, and the strength never to become silent when truth and justice are at stake.

Jummah Mubarak.
